Why we hide the dates
A date on the axis is a spoiler. Blind replay hides the calendar, so what is left is your read of the chart, and the reveal at the end becomes the lesson.

Put a chart of a major market in front of an experienced trader with the dates showing, and they know more than the chart does. March 2020 means a crash and a V. The second half of 2022 in crypto means a long way down. They don’t have to try. Memory does it for them.
A date is a spoiler
It isn’t only the famous episodes. The year tells you the regime: whether rates were rising, how the index was trending, which sectors led. A month tells you about earnings season. Even the weekday carries a little information. All of it leaks into decisions that are supposed to come from price alone.
That’s fine when you’re studying history. It’s poison when you’re trying to find out whether you can read a chart.
What blind replay takes away
A Backstride backtest can hide its dates. The terminal’s clock then counts from the start of the session,
Day 1 · 09:30, instead of showing a calendar date, and every order and fill is stamped the same way. The market itself
stays visible: you still know you’re trading Apple or ether, just not when.
The start is a random instant inside the range you choose, so the last session tells you nothing about the next one. The wider the range, the less you can guess.
The reveal is the lesson
When the session ends, the results page shows the dates. That moment is worth more than it sounds. You find out you spent the session inside a week you would have recognized instantly, and your read either held up without the help or it didn’t.
The same page puts your equity next to buy-and-hold over the exact days you traded. If holding would have done better, the session says so plainly.
A few habits that help
- Pick a range of a year or more. A narrow range is a date with extra steps.
- Do not restart a session until the chart looks familiar. Choosing the start by eye brings hindsight straight back.
- Write a line in the journal when you enter, and read it after the reveal. The note written blind is the honest one.
